Paris! 1861, City of light, art, scandal and great expectations, where extreme wealth rubs against raging poverty, with insurrection roiling beneath the surface.
In the United States, the war of 1861-65 destroys families and communities. Three survivors decide to leave behind the ruins of their former lives. Union cavalryman and aspiring artist Jack Volant, a survivor of Gettysburg, sails to Paris to pursue his artistic vision.
Charlotte Stuart, herself a talented sculptress, and her half-brother Jerome turn their backs on a scorched plantation and intractable prejudice. Charlotte becomes a favorite of Empress Eugenie, wife of Emperor Louie Napoleon and a renowned patron of artists, while Jerome joins forces with revolutionaries.
Eventually, Charlotte is able to introduce Jack to Les Refusés—the French Impressionists whose avant garde styles are deemed unacceptable by French jurists. For a little while, Jack is able to forget the horrors of war, painting alongside Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne, Degas, and Manet.
Elsewhere in the city, Jack’s disreputable brother Marcel profits from the sale of Egyptian artifacts of dubious origin. But in 1870, everything changes. A spirit of revolution sweeps through the city like a wild fire, and the disastrous Franco-Prussian war reduces Paris to a city under siege where starvation rules.
“Singerton hits the mark in his Civil War era novel The Refused. From the battle fields to Paris, artists to nobility, and politics this book comes highly recommended!” 5 Stars! – Chanticleer Book Reviews
The Refused – “Great story – I found the writing style of Mr. Singerton to be very moving. His ability to set the mood of a scene in just a couple of sentences is what really made this story appealing to me. I could associate with his characters; feel their nervousness or anger, depending on the moment. The era of the 1860’s came alive, and Singerton’s ability to scale a story between two continents, two societies with similar problems, was magnificently accomplished. The scandals as well as the sorrows meld beautifully in this work; an uplifting tribute to the human spirit. Bravo, I state!” – 5 Stars! Primer – Amazon
The Refused by Ron Singerton is an amazingly well researched novel that takes the reader from the destruction of the Civil War in the United States to the political upheaval in Paris and the turmoil of the Franco-Prussian War. . .The author has put lots of historical detail into this read. The characters are well developed and do a good job of helping to bring the setting and the political climate to life in both the United States and in France. I think fans of historical fiction will enjoy this read, or general fiction as well.” – 5 Stars! Phil Bolos – Amazon
